Hornets Card of the Day

Charlotte Hornets, Muggsy Bogues
April 22, 1987, marked the official birthdate of NBA basketball in Charlotte as the NBA Board of Governors granted the city one of four expansion franchises. Charlotte now owns the finest young frontcourt in the game in Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, and in 1993, Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal became the first NBA All-Star starters from the recent expansion teams. DID YOU KNOW? The Charlotte metropolitan area has the third-smallest population of NBA cities, but because the Charlotte Coliseum is the largest arena in the NBA (23,698), the Hornets have led the NBA in attendance three of their four seasons in the league. Kelly Tripucka scored the first point in Hornets history. SCORECARD. With a 117-110 triumph over the Golden State Warriors on November 20, 1992, the Hornets became the first of the late 1980s expansion teams to win 100 games.

Bennett was the GTE Academic All-America Player of the Year and Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year as a senior at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Green Bay, averaging 20.2 points and 5.1 assists per game. Revitalizing the Charlotte Hornets in 1994-95 was the return to NBA All-Star form of the team's two < marquee players, Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson. Both plagued by injuries in the 1993-94 season, Mourning and Johnson came back to play in the 1995 All-Star Game in Phoenix and also lead the Hornets to the 1995 NBA Playoffs. Mourning in particular, had a super season. The 6-10 center recorded an NBA career-high 1,643 points to go along with team-highs of 761 rebounds, 225 blocked shots and a .519 field goal shooting percentage.

Batum takes care of business and takes care of the ball, which is why he took things to another level in 2016-17. He emerged as the fourth player in NBA history to finish a season with 1,000 points, 450 rebounds, 450 assists and fewer than 200 turnovers. Boris Diaw, Jason Kidd and Fat Lever also did it.
