Name that player!

Al is a great pro. A fine fielder and dangerous hitter, and the possessor of a tremendous competitive spirit. His work was a vital part of the Giants' march to the 1954 pennant. Al appeared in 154 games, all the Giants played, and he hit .293. He had 189 hits for a total of 287 bases. These included 26 doubles, 6 triples and 20 home runs. He batted in 70 runs and scored 98. He began in baseball in 1946 with the then Boston Braves, and came to the Giants in 1950.

Mel Ott, the quiet, serious-looking player who has been a Polo Grounds hero since 1926, is back again this year ready to swing that right leg upward as he lashes out at the baseball. A great outfielder, Mel is starting his 16th season with the Giants and may have one of his best years if condition means anything. He hit .289 last year but brought across 79 runs. while scoring 89 himself and his 19 home runs. brought his total for 15 years to 388, an aver- age of close to 30 a season, and the National League record. His hit total is 2216, second only to Lloyd Waner among the active players, and he tops the league in runs batted in with 1465.

Lawrence J. Doyle, second baseman of the New York National League team, was born in Caseyville, Ill., July 31, 1886. He was an amateur ball player until 1905, when he joined the Mattoon Club of the "Kitty" League. At the close of the season of 1906 he was bought by the Giants for $4500. He has been the regular second baseman of the team since 1908.
