Name that player!

Eddie's fielding was as smooth as ever during his comeback in 1950. His work around first was credited with being the steadying influence on the young Philly infield. Hit .284. Led League in singles. Had 32 doubles. Chalked up 8 straight hits during one double header. Began in majors with Cubs. With them 3 seasons. Came to Phillies after the 1948 season. Served in the armed forces 3 years.

Cookie can be called upon to play second base, third base, shortstop, the outfield and even catch in a pinch. A .300 hitter in 1965, he was a National League All-Star performer. Although a slap hitter, Cookie reached a personal career high when he drove in 55 RBIs in 1966.

Shot by a crazed girl in June, 1949, Ed was close to death. He fought back and helped the Phils win the Pennant in 1950, hitting .284 and leading the National League at First in Putouts (1387). During World War II, he won 4 Battle Stars and was wounded as an Amphibious Engineer Sergeant in the Pacific. One of the toughest men in the League to strike out, Ed came to the Phils from the Cubs in 1949. His best marks were .304 in '46 and .306 in '49.

Back to the Front! Phillies card back du jour...

Curt Simmons
When Curt went into the Army in 1950, after leading the Phils to the National League Pennant with a 17-8 record, the Phillies World Series and 1951 Pennant hopes faded. He's back again this year and hopes are high again. Curt signed with the Phillies' organization in 1947 for a $65,000 bonus. In his first year at Wilmington, he won 13, lost 5 and struck out 197. With the Phils at the end of '47, he won 1 game and had records of 7-13 and 4-10 in 1948 and '49.
