Phillies Card of the Day

Zack Wheeler
Pitching deep into games requires strike-throwing. No problem for Wheeler. The veteran right-hander led his league with three complete games and two shutouts, also topping the circuit's pitchers in innings. The hurler proved worthy of all that work in an All-Star campaign.

Name that player!

Among farmhands who threw at least 50 innings in 2023, Orion forged the fifth-lowest WHIP and 11th-highest strikeout rate (38.0%). He earned his first big-league win in relief on September 27.

In all of Phils' 157 games in 1950. One of the six in the League to be in all of their teams' contest. By doing so, Willie set a mark for third basemen. A late season slump brought Puddinhead's batting average down to .267. But he hit 28 doubles, 6 triples, 25 homers. Drove in 88 runs. His first year in pro ball was 1947. Joined Phils at end of 1948. Played some ball when in Navy, hitting over .700.

Robin soared high in 1950, his second full major-league season. In winning his 20th game, on the last day of the campaign, he copped the National League pennant for Philadelphia, in a do-or-die stand against the rampaging Dodgers. Final record was 20-11. Tied for lead in shutouts with five. Pitched 3 shutouts in row. Won 7 straight. Had a 15-15 record in 1949. Signed for big bonus.
