Athletics Card of the Day

Jose Canseco
Canseco didn't take too kindly to getting hit by a pitch on his 24th birthday (July 2, 1988), so he took it out on Toronto with a powerhouse performance the next day. Teeing off in the first, sixth and 12th innings, the slugger followed Jimmie Foxx (1932) as the franchise's second player with three homers, six RBI and a walk in a game.

Name that player!

Coco has had a long and fruitful career as a speedy center fielder who not only has won a stolen base title (2011), but has hit with pop. Recovery from elbow surgery and a cervical strain slowed him in 2015.

Pete, who played at second, third and short for the Athletics in 1954, got into a total of 69 games and hit an even .200. He had 41 hits, and batted in 16 runs, which is a good percentage of runs driven in. He's been in organized baseball since 1935 when he broke in at third base for Washington of the Pennsylvania State League. He came to the major leagues in 1941 with the Athletics, and has spent his entire major league career with the same team. He had a good year in 1953, hitting .286 for 115 games.

A cracker-jack fielder. Batted .233 in 131 games in 1950. Drove in 58 runs. Eddie's first major-league club, the Cincinnati Reds, traded him to the Boston Braves at the end of 1942. On baseball's voluntary retired list in 1944, but came back in 1945 to play in 35 games. Switched to minors by the Braves. Brought back to majors by A's. Their regular shortstop since 1947. Batted .263 in 144 games, 1949.

Sam Chapman
Sam's 1950 batting average was only .251, but his base knocks included 23 home runs. Sam is one of the few players who never was in the minors. He came directly to the A's from college in 1938, and - with time out for Uncle Sam - has been with them ever since. His best season was 1941, when he hit .322 and drove in 106 runs. Sam got the All-America nod in football at U. of California.
