No. 6, The Catcher's Throw: A catcher's throw to the bases is distinctly different from the throwing style of any other position on the team. The catcher throws overhand, crooking his elbow close behind his head and snapping the ball with a brisk, whipping motion. He must never throw with a sidearm or full arm sweep, as is the pitching method. The quick overhand snap gives accuracy and speed and comes only with long practice. A good catcher gets ready to throw to the base before the pitched ball reaches his glove.

Cornelius J. McGillicuddy (Connie Mack), manager of the Philadelphia American League team, was born at Brookfield, Mass., in 1862. His first appearance as a professional was with the Meriden, Conn., team in 1884, as a catcher. He played with Washington three years, and caught for six years for Pittsburgh, and managed that team from 1894 until 1896. In 1901 he went to Philadelphia and established the Athletics of the American League.

The Kansas City front office rub their hands with delight seeing that Jim is now on the Athletics' roster and not on the roster of the opposition. A 24-year-old lefthanded batter, Jim is a product of the Red Sox farm chain. In 1964, at Reading in the Eastern League, Jim's thirteen triples was the high mark in the circuit. Fleet-footed as a base-runner, Jim was tied for fourth in doubles. on the Kansas City club last season. The young man snared up 5 stolen bases in 1966.
