Achieved 14 Strikeouts in one game: 8-1-87.

1951 was a terrific year for Gus. He led the American League in Home Runs and Runs Batted In and in Assists for outfielders. Gus also tied the major league record for the most home runs in 3 straight games with 6 circuit clouts and hit 7 in 4 straight games to tie the American League mark. A radio mechanic in the Navy during the War, Gus broke in with the White Sox in 1949 and was traded to the A's in 1951.

Wilmer, brother of the Athletics' pitcher Bobby, appeared in 51 games for the Philadelphia team in 1954, hitting .256. He had 42 hits for 60 total bases. These included 9 doubles, 3 triples and 1 homer, and he batted in 17 runs, scoring 13. Billy and Bobby look a great deal alike. He didn't have much opportunity to catch his brother in 1954, since Bobby's sore arm prevented him from working for the A's. With Ottawa in 1953 Billy was in 105 games, hitting .227.

Sam Chapman
Sam's 1950 batting average was only .251, but his base knocks included 23 home runs. Sam is one of the few players who never was in the minors. He came directly to the A's from college in 1938, and - with time out for Uncle Sam - has been with them ever since. His best season was 1941, when he hit .322 and drove in 106 runs. Sam got the All-America nod in football at U. of California.
