Red Sox Card of the Day

Jim Lonborg
In his sophomore year with the Red Sox in 1966, Jim worked in 45 ballgames and topped the Boston staff with 131 strikeouts. The 24-year-old righthander has shown steady improvement in his first two big league seasons and the front office believes Jim could be the club's next twenty-game winner. When his pitches are low, he's one of the game's toughest men to hit. Jim only appeared in 31 contests in the minors!

Name that player!

Joe started in majors with Cleveland in 1939 and it wasn't until Sept. 1943 with Boston Red Sox, to whom he had been traded at end of 1940 season, that he made his first major league error. During that time he played 156 consecutive games and accepted 153 chances, for a League record. In 1947 he won 18 games while losing 8 and had earned run average of 2.95. Last season his record was 16-10 and his 3.56 ERA was sixth best in League.

A superstar in his era, Wade has seen the appreciation of his greatness only grow with the modern emphasis on plate discipline and on-base skills. The five-time AL batting champion produced more walks than strikeouts in 17 of his 18 seasons.

Felix was traded from the New York Mets to the Red Sox last winter in a three man deal.

Pedro Martinez
No right-handed 200-game winner of the modern era can match Martinez's .687 winning percentage. Lefty Whitey Ford is just a hair better at .690.
