Name that player!

A native of Texas, the Astros signed John when he showed up at their Texas Camp for a try-out. The Houston catcher is a natural-born athlete and a standout in several sports. During his high school days, John played basketball and football as well as baseball. He has good speed for a catcher and topped the Astros with six triples in 1963.

Altuve reaches the height of his powers in the postseason, it seems, towering over competitors when everything is on the line. He stacks up huge against his historical contemporaries as well. The 5-foot-6 star crushed 23 playoff homers through 2021, easily topping Mickey Mantle's mark (18) for players shorter than 6 feet.

Lum was manager of the Houston Astros for the 1965 season. The former big league hurler had spent three seasons as coach for the Texas ballclub from 1962 through 1964. Back in 1937, Lum began his professional playing career as he pitched in the Southern Association and the Piedmont League. Two years later at Atlanta, the righthander put in a serious bid for a major league promotion when he compiled a 17-8 record. Lum was brought up by the old Philadelphia Athletics in 1941 and won 4 games as a rookie. During his American League career, he pitched almost exclusively for the Athletics. A control specialist, Lum walked only 26 men in 174 innings in 1944. Lum was released as manager of the Houston Astros on December 12, 1965.

Lee Maye
Lee was obtained from the Milwaukee Braves early in the 1965 campaign. There are few players who are as confident of their ability and give as much of themselves in trying to fulfill their potential as Lee does. He uses his good speed on the bases as well as in the outfield.
