Astros Card of the Day

Astro Aces: Bob Aspromonte, Rusty Staub
The Houston Astros are banking heavily on top performances from Bob Aspromonte and Rusty Staub to help propel the club into the first division in 1966. Bob Aspromonte, a product of the Dodgers' farm chain, set a record when he played 57 consecutive ballgames at third base without committing an error in 1962. The infielder set a club record when he cracked 7 straight hits for Houston. Bob's older brother, Ken, is a former major leaguer. The two Aspromonte boys graduated from the same high school as pitching ace Sandy Koufax. Young Rusty Staub spent only one year in the minors before joining Houston in 1963. A former Topps All-Star rookie, Rusty hit .263 last year and was second on the club in RBIs. A natural athlete, the first baseman was named Louisiana Schoolboy of the Year.

Name that player!

Selected as the "Player of the Year" in the Texas League in 1964, Chris has all the credentials for major league stardom. The big righthander has an excellent fastball, a sharp curve and a slip pitch. Chris is a real hard worker as evidenced by his extra duty in the Arizona Instructional League in 1962 and the Florida Instructional League in 1963. Watch him buzz the ball in 1966.

This one-of-a-kind superstar is the epitome of a pure hitter, yet he continues to work hard at improving his craft. Jose's dedication paid off with a power explosion in 2016 to go along with another lofty batting average. As Houston's first 20/20 player since Carlos Beltran in 2004, he was named the AL Player of the Month after batting .420 with a .492 on-base percentage in June.

The dizzying pace of Yordan's production continues. In 2021, he became the sixth player with 90 RBI in his first 100 MLB games, as well as Houston's second 24-or-younger hitter with 30 homers in a season.
