A fine playmaker, Butch tied Connie Hawkins of the Lakers for the NBA's seasonal high in assists during 1973-74 with 13 against the Trail Blazers on March 26. One of his foremost achievements in the NBA was making the All-Star team with Cleveland after coming out of the service.
A low draft choice, Al proved himself by not only sticking but doing a solid job night in and night out. A fine one hand jump makes him dangerous from anywhere within 25 feet of the basket. Fast and springy, the youngster proved to be more rugged than his appearance would indicate. His 7-point scoring average last season, his first in the NBA, is not indicative of his true worth since he was used spasmodically.
The rich got even richer, as the Warriors landed Durant in the offseason. After spending his entire career with the Thunder, Durant joins a franchise that's reached the NBA Finals the past two seasons. "We try to get better every day we wake up." Warriors general manager Bob Myers said, "You never expect to get this much better."
