HAKEEM'S DREAM SEASON CLIMAXES WITH DEFENSIVE AWARD. New York, NY, May 14, 1993 - Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon, the league blocked-shot leader in three of the last four seasons, has been named the 1993 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. In 1992-93, the 7-0 Nigerian rejected 55 more shots (342) than any other player, led all centers in steals (150) and was second in defensive rebounds (785). He captured 74% of the possible votes.
Sengun made massive strides during each of his first three seasons. As a rookie in 2021-22, he put up 9.6 points per night, then bumped that up to 14.8 as a sophomore. In campaign No. 3, the rising center made an even larger leap and averaged 21.1 points plus 9.3 rebounds.
Solid year in 1993-94 included a career-high 41 points vs. the Lakers 12/26/93...Three-point percentage (405) ranked eighth in the NBA...Finished 1992-93 with the best field goal percentage among guards (.520).
