Panthers Card of the Day

Drew Shore
One Shore has arrived in the NHL, and another one could be on the way soon. Shore was looking like a keeper for Florida as the Panthers started to increase his minutes in 2012-13 and watched the pivot reward them with points. Shore's younger brother, Nick, was selected by the Kings in the 2011 draft.

Name that player!

A big center with excellent speed, Rob Niedermayer was the Florida Panthers first pick, fifth overall, in last spring's NHL entry draft. He is projected as an impact player with gamebreaking abilities. In addition to speed, the young center also uses his size to his advantage. This combination of speed and the power game make Niedermayer a force for the expansion Panthers. He played three seasons of junior hockey with Medicine Hat of the WHL before being drafted. He collected 99 goals and 106 assists for 205 points in those three seasons. Rob's older brother Scott is one the NHL's best young defensemen.

When Bill Torrey was running the Islanders, he drafted a youngster named Denis Potvin, who went on to become one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history. Now in Florida, Torrey is hoping to get the same kind of effort from Ed, whom he chose first overall in 1994. A thunderous hitter, Ed debuted with the Panthers on Nov. 2, 1995, after recovering from a broken finger.

Ekblad recorded his 68th career point on March 15, 2016, to move into 10th place on the Panthers' all-time list for most points by a defenseman. He signed an eight-year contract with Florida in July 2016.

Back to the Front! Panthers card back du jour...

Jay Bouwmeester
Despite an eleventh-hour draft day deal that saw Florida and Columbus swap positions, it was a foregone conclusion that the Panthers were going after Jay with their first round pick. They fully expected him to step right into their NHL lineup and, of course, that is what he did. Ultimately taken third overall, Bouwmeester was a defensive stalwart for both the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) and Team Canada, with whom he won a silver medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships. He collected an assist in his NHL debut on October 10, 2002.
