One of the few stars never to play in the minors, the Texas University ace broke into the Reds' lineup in 1946 after being discharged from the Army Air Force. Grady caught the eyes of Big League scouts while playing with army teams. Considered a top-notch fielder, he led all National League 3rd basemen in 1949 in double plays and fielding with a .975 average. A fractured right thumb sidelined him for two months in 1951.
Willie Mays is the lone player to amass more hits or total bases in a Giants uniform than Mel, who spent his entire 22-year career with the franchise. A six-time NL home run champion, Ott was selected for 12 straight Midsummer Classics starting in 1934.
Began umpiring in the Big State League and after five years' experience in the Pacific Coast League was taken south in the spring of 1954 and was signed to an American League contract. Had a brief playing trial with Washington in 1936. Played Professional Basketball four years in Canada, and also did some professional roller skating.
