The Reds spotted Ted in 1945 when they were training at the University of Indiana. Not only was he a star baseball player, but also an All-American end on the football team. After leading 2 minor leagues in batting with .352 in 1946 and .377 in 1947, Ted became the Reds' first baseman in 1948. In '51 he was the best fielding first baseman in the National League. He had a great year in '50. hitting 25 homers and batting .307.
In the first two seasons of his career a not yet 21 year old Gooden was as dominant as any right hander of the live ball era. Pedro Martinez (1999 2000) is the only one ever to have matched his 41 wins, 2.00 ERA and 544 strikeouts in any two season span.
The 26-year-old first baseman joined the Senators in the deal that brought Frank Howard from L. A. to Washington. In the minors Dick earned quite a reputation for himself. He was the California League's home run champion and RBI leader in 1961. Dick twice led his circuit in putouts while in the Dodger farm chain.
