Oklahoma State point guard Doug Gottlieb had this to say about Desmond Mason, the 17th selection of the 2000 NBA Draft: "He's had a couple of (dunks] that Vince Carter would be in awe of. Desmond does things that humans aren't supposed to do. During warmups other teams will stop what they're doing just to watch him." The NBA borrowed the Slam-Dunk Championship from the ABA, recycling the event in 1984. However, it wasn't until Michael Jordan burst onto the scene in 1985 that the competition was elevated to its current level of popularity. Jordan claimed his first title in 1987, and the next year, he became the only player ever to win back-to-back contests. With a 50 on his final dunk after taking off from the free throw line with his body fully extended until the one-handed finish, Jordan bested Dominique Wilkins in 1988.
