Name that player!
One of the most prolific scorers in professional basketball history and a former player close to the hearts of many hoops fans in Denver is making what many hope to be a triumphant return to the Mile High city. On May 20, 1992, the team named former Nugget great Dan Issel as its new head coach. The fifth-leading scorer in ABA-NBA history, only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving and Moses Malone have racked up more than his 27,482 career points. An ironman and hard-nosed competitor as a player, Issel earned ABA All-Star berths in each of his six seasons with the Kentucky Colonels and Denver Nuggets. Over 10 seasons with the Nuggets, he averaged 20.6 PPG. A dedicated performer on the court and an effervescent personality away from the game, Issel's combination of a player's knowledge of the game and tireless work ethic may be just what the doctor ordered for this young but potentially explosive Denver Nuggets squad.
In the NBA, Clowney not only had to adjust to talented defenders, but the shot clock as well. "You gotta get a good shot up within 24 seconds. And nobody wants to play the whole 24 seconds," he said. "Most teams try to get it up first, if you can get it up in the first six to eight, you wanna get a good shot up then."
