When L.A. Lakers' general manager Jerry West selected Vlade Divac in the first round of the 1989 draft, even the former L.A. superstar guard admitted the pick was a gamble. The Yugoslavian center proved to be more than a capable backup for center Mychal Thompson. Vlade played in every game for the Lakers in the 1989-90 season, and led the Pacific Division champs in blocked shots and finished third in rebounds.
