Getting off the field on third down is imperative for defenses. Excelling at keeping drives short, the Utes consistently snuffed out plays and ended possessions in 2023. Especially Bishop. The safety had a nose for the football, coming downhill and tying the team-high with 9.5 third-down stops.
As a pass catching end in college, Tom rated with the best in the country. He was voted All-Missouri Valley every year, was mentioned on several All-American Teams and in 1950 placed 2nd in the Nation among offensive ends. When he joined the Cards in '51 Tom was put on defense and the experiment was a complete success. Today he is one of the finest defensemen in the N.F.L. - a whiz at tackling and an airtight operator on pass defense.
Big Rick is one of the most destructive line-busting fullbacks in the game. He was second in yards gained last season and carried the ball the most times. The pile-driving dynamo was the previous year's leading ground-gainer.
