Cliff Battles of the Boston Redskins is one of the leading ground gainers of professional football, notice the way he extends his free arm to ward off tacklers. The "stiff" or "straight" arm is one of the carrier's most useful means of avoiding the tackle. Most effective method is NOT merely to shove the tackler away, but to place the hand on his shoulder at the angle of the neck and lift the feet off the ground to ride away on the force of his charge. Thus when his charge is spent, the carrier still at arm's length, resumes his gallop, shaking free of the tackler's clutching fingers. In straight arming your man, be sure to throw your feet out of reach and to keep the arm fully extended. Cliff Battles, West Virginia Wesleyan, All Pro Halfback. 6 ft. 1 inch tall, 195 pounds.
