Went pro with the Redskins in 1949. Won first-string tackle job in first pro year. Works as a salesman during the off-season. Member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Born in Red Lodge, Montana, but played high school football in Clarkston, Washington, the home town of all-time Rose Bowler Turk Edwards. While at Washington State was coached by Phil Sarboe, who was formerly a Redskin. One of the finest tackles in National Football League.
Jumped in NFL scoring from 8th place in 1949 to second place in 1950. Recorded 109 points on 11 touchdowns running. Made 34 extra points out of 35 attempted and 3 field goals out of 5 tries. Top NFL rookie, 1948. All-American quarterback, Notre Dame, 1946-47. Brilliant field general, forward passer, handler, runner. Heisman Award winner. Served in the Navy, Jan. 1944 to 1946.
