Name that player!

The most publicized ball-player of World War II, the "Hondo Hurricane" became a Giant in 1947. Clint had so much talent that they didn't know where to play him. He pitched, played first base and the outfield and finally remained an outfielder at the end of 1950. In 4 seasons as a pitcher, he had a 29-29 record. At the plate, he hit .309 in '47 and .302 in '50. In March of 1952 he was optioned to Minneapolis to get more experience in the outfield.

Fans are not going to forget Bobby's one out, last of the ninth home run in the third playoff game against the Dodgers last fall. It drove in 3 runs, gave the Giants the game, 5-4, and, with it, the pennant. Bobby hit .294 for the 1951 season. Drove in 101 runs. Had 32 homers.

On 5/1/01, Jeff made the Pirates pay for pitching around Barry Bonds, as he knocked in seven.

Back to the Front! Giants card back du jour...

William (Bill) Terry
No. 4, First Baseman's Stretch: In judging close plays at first base, major league umpires watch for the runner's foot to strike the base and, at the same time, listen for the smack of the ball against the first baseman's mitt; thus combining sight and sound to make the decision. Knowing this, Bill Terry and other star first sackers, stretch as far as they can to meet the thrown ball (see drawing), shortening its flight by five or six feet and causing it to smack into their glove a split second sooner than if they waited while standing upright on the bag.
