White Sox Card of the Day

Jermaine Dye
Healthy again in 2004 after a cruel '03 season, Jermaine - who signed with the White Sox in December - gave the Athletics a strong bat. On August 8, he locked down one of the year's most thrilling victories by cracking a go-ahead single in the 18th inning at Minnesota.

Name that player!

Jumped right from college ball at Baylor University in Texas in 1923 and made good. Three years later pitched a no-hit, no-run game against the Red Sox. Has been one of the star twirlers of the American League ever since. Last year won 10 games and lost 15 for a ball club which finished seventh. Born at Lake Charles, La., in 1900. Did some infielding in boyhood days, before he became a pitching star. Is five feet, 10 1⁄2 inches tall and weighs 173, batting and throwing right-handed.

Luis is one of the real speed demons of baseball. As a fielder, he makes stops that look impossible and turns sure hits into outs. In 1956, he was tops in Putouts and Assists and placed third among A.L. Shortstops in Double Plays. It was a repeat performance for Luis, duplicating his 1955 record at Memphis. On the basepaths he was the A.L. Stolen Base King with 20 swipes.

Charlie was traded to the White Sox last winter as part of the deal that sent Roy Sievers to Philadelphia. The infielder started the 1961 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before going to the Phils last May. With Spokane in 1960, Charlie hit .322.

Johnny Groth
Although he was born and raised in Chicago, Groth was signed by Detroit. He finally made it back to his home when Baltimore traded him to the White Sox. A steady hitter, Groth also is a fleet center fielder. His .993 fielding average led the league in 1951. He earned a major league try-out by leading International League in runs, hits, doubles and triples in 1948.
