The Dodgers swapped Wayne to the Senators in September of '52. He'd been with the Cubs since '49 before coming to the Brooks in July of '51. "Twig" had an impressive war record serving with the Marines at Saipan, Tinjay and Iwo Jima. He's been in pro ball since '48 and came up to the Majors after hitting .278 for Los Angeles in '49. In '50, as a Cub, he hit 10 HR's. 1951 was spent at St. Paul.

Fielding Tips - Touching the Runner. Infielders realise the danger of being spiked by baserunners. When a runner is stealing, "Buddy" Myer of the Washing-ton Senators, will dash for the bag, hug-ging it between his feet and facing the runner as he prepares to take the throw from his catcher. Thus the saw dust filled base protects his feet from the sharp spikes while also giving him a steady, firm footing. After taking the throw, Myer holds the ball a foot or two in front of the bag and close to the ground so that the runner slides in and, literally, touches himself out. Do not make the mistake of reaching to meet the runner or in trying to touch him on the body, lest he slide safely underneath the ball.

The youth from North Carolina was brought up by the Senators to help bolster their pitching staff last season. Barry has all of the equipment to become a big winner in the major leagues, once he masters his control problem. In 1963, the southpaw led the Carolina League in wild pitches and the following season he topped the Eastern League in bases on balls.
