Reds Card of the Day

Bill McCool
Bill was a key reason for the Reds' pennant bid last year. The youngster came to the majors with just one season of minor league ball under his belt. Staying cool in tense situations, the 20 year old southpaw was a big man in the Cincinnati bullpen. Cincinnati scouts had kept an eye on Bill since his high school days, when the lefthander raised eyebrows by pitching three no-hitters.

Name that player!

It was 10 years ago that Joe first appeared in the major leagues, yet he is only 25 now. At 15 he was the youngest player ever to appear in the major leagues. During two years in Redleg farm system he continued his studies in high school. He played prep ball in 1946, so that he is probably the only boy ever to appear in the big leagues and then return to high school competition. He was All-Ohio in football and basketball in high school.

Tall, thin, Blackwell looks like a spider when he winds up. His wicked side arm delivery develops a speed that has put him among the top flight pitchers. In 1947, he won 22 games and lost 8. His phenomenal feat of striking out 193 batters and also winning 16 straight games will be talked about in baseball for many years. Playing organized baseball since 1942 with 3 years out for war.

The submarine pitcher began the '67 season with a win and 7 saves in his first 9 games!

Ted Davidson
Ted came highly recommended to the Cincinnati club. Unlike most young hurlers, this southpaw is perfectly content to serve as a relief pitcher. Ted possesses all of the prerequisites which should make him a success in the National League: good stuff, good control and a good temperament.
