This 19-year-old catcher made up his mind to play in the majors after serving as bat boy for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 through 1963. In his first season in the minors in 1964, Rene led the Midwest League in home runs and played in the circuit's All-Star game. The youth from L. A. was a star high school athlete as he played baseball, basketball and football.
Ken was credited with the victory in the first game of the 1972 World Series vs. the Reds. He pitched into the 6th inning and was relieved by Rollie Fingers and then by Vida Blue who saved 3-2 triumph.
Joe ran into tough pitching luck in 1950. The righthander from Massachusetts was in 15 games, losing 5, and not winning any. In 1949 his record was 13-14. In 1948 it was 14-13. Joe entered baseball in 1941. He joined the Athletics at the end of the 1942 season. Spent the next 3 years in the service.
