My Favorite Baseball Memories by Jim Robertson: My biggest thrill in baseball was my first major league game. The best fielding play I've seen involved the 1949 Yankees. There was a ground ball to Phil Rizzuto in the hole. He flipped to Billy Johnson at second, who threw the runner out at first. The funniest incident in a game also involved Rizzuto, when he was caught in a run-down. My advice to youngsters: Play ball, don't watch it on TV. And to me, the most important part of baseball is pitching.

This 19-year-old catcher made up his mind to play in the majors after serving as bat boy for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 through 1963. In his first season in the minors in 1964, Rene led the Midwest League in home runs and played in the circuit's All-Star game. The youth from L. A. was a star high school athlete as he played baseball, basketball and football.

Pitching Tips - The Recovery. Roy Mahaffey, one of the shrewdest pitchers on the Athletics' staff, advises young pitchers to be quick to recover their balance after delivering the pitch. After completing the delivery come evenly to your feet, ready to move toward either side of the diamond for bunts and slow ground hits. Be sure to keep your glove hand in front of your body to protect yourself against hard line drives through the box. Remember! A pitcher is as responsible for fielding his position as any infielder. It is important that pitchers learn to cover first base in ground drives which pull the baseman too far off the bag.

Back to the Front! Athletics card back du jour...

Mike Hershberger
Mike came into the Oakland organization via a complicated three team trade that involved eight players. For the fourth season in a row, Mike improved offensively at the plate. In 1967, the outfielder was second on the team in doubles and third on the club in basehits and runs batted in. Mike once led the I.I.I. League with 21 triples!
