"The Little Professor" is the youngest of three brothers all of whom made their mark in the majors. Regarded as the greatest center-fielder in the game, he set the American League record for Putouts with 503 in 1948. He led the League in Runs in 1950 and 1951. Dom broke in with the Red Sox in 1940 and has been their regular center-fielder since, except for 3 years, when he served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy.
Vern is one of the game's better shortstops. In the 1949 campaign he hit .290, and tied for the league lead in runs batted in (159). He slammed out 31 doubles and 39 homers. Slugging percentage, 539. Vern was traded to the Sox by the Browns after the 1947 season. In 1945 he topped the circuit in homers. Has been on 5 all-star teams.
In just his second Major League start for Boston on 9/1/07, Buchholz put his name in the history books with a stellar 115-pitch no-hitter against Baltimore. The lanky right-hander was still firing away in the ninth inning as he recorded his eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game in that frame. He became the 17th hurler in Red Sox history to spin a no-hitter.
