Name that player!

Vern is one of the game's better shortstops. In the 1949 campaign he hit .290, and tied for the league lead in runs batted in (159). He slammed out 31 doubles and 39 homers. Slugging percentage, 539. Vern was traded to the Sox by the Browns after the 1947 season. In 1945 he topped the circuit in homers. Has been on 5 all-star teams.

Mike Scioscia saw Duran's potential during his time with Team USA in the spring of 2021. "He's a five-tool player," he said. "When you call a guy a five-tool player you're saying that he's special. He's in an elite group. I think that Jarren has that that skill set that can make him an impact player very quickly in the [big] leagues."

Red Sox skipper Alex Cora did not need a long look at Enmanuel to find something he liked about the 2022 trade acquisition. "He can hit," Cora says. "I do believe the bat is going to play at the big-league level." It certainly did early. In his first 10 games following his mid-April promotion in 2023, Valdez went 12-for-35 (353) with an .875 OPS.

Vern (Junior) Stephens
"Junior," "Buster," and "Lit-tle Slug" are some of the nicknames that have got fastened to the slugging Bosox shortstop. In knocking 144 runs across the plate in 1950, Vern tied for the second straight year for leadership in that department. Hit .295 in 149 games. Had 34 doubles, 30 homers. Fielded .981. With Browns, 1941-1947. Traded to Sox for 1948. Led League in home runs, 1945.
