Pirates Card of the Day

Arky Vaughan
Arky Vaughan last year maintained a major league record of never hitting below .300. For the ninth consecutive season, since he joined the Pirates in 1932, Vaughan batted .300 or better. His mark in 1940 was an even .300 but he reached a peak in timeliness with 95 runs batted in, and led the league in triples with 15, and runs scored with 113, while not missing a single one of the 156 games in which the Pirates took part. Vaughan has appeared in 5 of the inter-league all-star games and boasts a batting average for the mid-season classic of .313.

Marcano made his way into the starting lineup on April 15, 2021 and quickly showed staying power. Against Pittsburgh, the infielder helped San Diego jump out to a big lead with an RBI double-his first in the big leagues-to cap a four-run opening frame. The Steel City squad was so impressed, it procured his services that summer.

Clem divided his time in the Pirate infield in '52 between 2nd Base, Shortstop and 3rd Base. The Pirates drafted him in November of '51 after he led Southern Association shortstops in Fielding. The speedy "pepper-pot" broke the Central League Stolen Base record in '49 when he stote 39 bases. Clem's pro career started in 1946.

Became a regular with St. Louis Cards in 1942 after sensational 1941 season with Columbus where he led League in games won, strikeouts and bases on balls and tied for most complete games. Stayed with Cards until 1944 when he entered service. Back with Cards for 1946 season, he had record of 15-6, for a .714 percentage, best in NL. Following season he won 13 and lost 16 and last year his record was 12-16. Traded to Pittsburgh Pirates in spring of 1949.

Monty Basgall
If his hitting picks up, smooth-fielding Monty is bound to stick in the majors this year. He spent 1951 shuttling between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, where he hit .255 in 37 games. A veteran of 3 years in the Service, Monty first came up to the Pirates in 1948 after hitting .272 at Ft. Worth. He was sent down to New Orleans and brought back again in '49, when he hit .216 in 107 games. In '50 Monty hit .281 at Indianapolis.
