Name that player!

Succeeds Lou Boudreau at the difficult shortstop position for the Indians. Batted .301 in 109 games in 1950. Began in organized baseball in 1942. Next 3 years in the service. With Wilkes-Barre in 1946. Worked up the ladder and got a chance with Indians toward end of 1948 season. In six games for the Tribe that year, batting an even .400. Got into 86 games during the 1949 campaign, and hit .252.



The Indians optioned "Sad Sam", to Indianapolis in August of '52 and recalled him the next month. Sam started in organized ball in '50, compiling a 17-8 record for Wilkes-Barre of the Eastern League. He was moved up to San Diego in '51 and there led the Pacific Coast League hurlers with 246 Strikeouts. The big speedballer joined the Tribe at the end of the '51 season and appeared in 2 ball games for them.



Struck out 18 batters in one 9 inning game - a modern major league record. Another major league record he holds is 348 strike-outs in one season. Has led his league in games won for 5 of the 8 full seasons he has played major league ball and has led in SO 6 times. He pitched a no-hit game in 1940 and again in 1946. He spent '42, '43 and '44 in the Navy. He has been on four All Star Teams.
