Lakers Card of the Day

Los Angeles Lakers, Sedale Threatt
One of the NBA's most entertaining franchises, the Lakers played a major role in the league's rise in popularity in the 1980s. Styled as the "Showtime" Lakers and led by charismatic guard Magic Johnson, the team captured five NBA titles during the decade. With 11 NBA Championships overall, the franchise trails only the Boston Celtics in postseason success. DID YOU KNOW? The Lakers' 69-13 record in 1971-72 is the best in NBA history. The Lakers are the last NBA team to select a guard with the first overall pick of the NBA Draft (Johnson, 1979). In 1984-85, L.A. shot an NBA-record .545 from the field. SCORECARD. On January 9, 1972, the Milwaukee Bucks topped the Lakers 120-104, snapping L.A.'s 33-game winning streak, the longest ever in any major pro sport.

Name that player!

Keeping himself in exquisite physical shape, James continues to be one of the most intimidating dunkers in the game. When he barrels through the lane, which is quite often, the powerful playmaker prefers to finish his drives with statement-sending slams, letting his foes know that he's going to bring it all night long.

Happy was injured during the 1972-73 season but returned to join the Lakers for the Playoffs. He achieved a long sought after goal in 1971-72 by attaining his 1000th Rebound of the season. Happy is very effective on Lakers' fastbreak.

Built more in the mold of Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, James plays a team-first brand of basketball, creating easy shots for his teammates and helping control the pace of each game. The playmaking forward entered the 2019-20 season with a career average of 7.2 helpers.

Jamaal Wilkes
Jamaal carries the nickname "Silk" because of the smoothness and fluidity that marks his style of play. As a rookie in 1974-75 he broke into the Warriors' starting lineup after only 8 games and went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors. An outstanding defensive player.
