Lakers Card of the Day

Los Angeles Lakers, Sedale Threatt
One of the NBA's most entertaining franchises, the Lakers played a major role in the league's rise in popularity in the 1980s. Styled as the "Showtime" Lakers and led by charismatic guard Magic Johnson, the team captured five NBA titles during the decade. With 11 NBA Championships overall, the franchise trails only the Boston Celtics in postseason success. DID YOU KNOW? The Lakers' 69-13 record in 1971-72 is the best in NBA history. The Lakers are the last NBA team to select a guard with the first overall pick of the NBA Draft (Johnson, 1979). In 1984-85, L.A. shot an NBA-record .545 from the field. SCORECARD. On January 9, 1972, the Milwaukee Bucks topped the Lakers 120-104, snapping L.A.'s 33-game winning streak, the longest ever in any major pro sport.

Name that player!

A three-time NBA All-Star Game starter before he turned 23, Kobe seems destined for all-time greatness. Incredibly, he's still getting better. Much better. In '00-01, he boosted his scoring average six points per game to 28.5 (fourth in the NBA) while maintaining both his shooting percentage and rate of assists - no easy feat. Along the way, he chalked up a 51-point game, as well as the first two triple-doubles of what should be a boatload of them in his career.

Hard-working player...Fundamentally sound... aggressive defender... hustles whenever he's in the game.

Long known as one of the toughest defenders in the league, Beverley relishes the challenge of taking on elite scorers. His ability to stick like glue and hound opponents possession after possession pays dividends late in games, when he causes shots to fall short and stops to pile up.

Back to the Front! Lakers card back du jour...

Johnny Egan
Smallest player in NBA, Johnny has proved during 8-year career there's still a place for small-man. An excellent playmaker, Egan averaged 8.5 pts. during season and surprised with 13.9 pace in playoffs.
