Why are scouts so confident Kobe can adapt to the NBA? Excellent grades; the experience of traveling Europe with a father (Joe "Jellybean" Bryant) who played 16 years of pro ball; and a scoring average of 30.7 PPG...to name three reasons. Washington's Tim Legler, who played with Bryant in a summer Icugue, offered this: "There were 10-12 NBA players in the gym, and it was difficult to tell the difference."

This all-around performer can play any position on the court. Rookie of the Year in 1958-59, Elgin had his greatest scoring campaign last season with 2,538 points. On Nov. 15, 1960 he shattered the record output for one game, sinking a fantastic 71 points against the Knickerbockers. He also set a record for most successful free throws in a season, connecting on 676 tries. He was the players' choice on the All-Star team for the third straight time.

One of the NBA's most entertaining franchises, the Lakers played a major role in the league's rise in popularity in the 1980s. Styled as the "Showtime" Lakers and led by charismatic guard Magic Johnson, the team captured five NBA titles during the decade. With 11 NBA Championships overall, the franchise trails only the Boston Celtics in postseason success. DID YOU KNOW? The Lakers' 69-13 record in 1971-72 is the best in NBA history. The Lakers are the last NBA team to select a guard with the first overall pick of the NBA Draft (Johnson, 1979). In 1984-85, L.A. shot an NBA-record .545 from the field. SCORECARD. On January 9, 1972, the Milwaukee Bucks topped the Lakers 120-104, snapping L.A.'s 33-game winning streak, the longest ever in any major pro sport.

Bronny James, Jr.
You know the name. Do you know the game? James brings a tantalizing skill set to the Lakers. A defense-first guard who moves laterally with grace, he traps foes and uses well-timed punches to snatch steals. On the other end, he makes an impact with transition scores and catch-and-shoot treys.
