Squires Card of the Day

Roland Taylor
The only unanimous choice to the ABA All-Defensive Squad for 1972-73, Roland hasn't been chubby since his childhood but still answers as readily to "Fatty" as he does to Roland. He tries to pick his spots for a steal. He doesn't go after the ball all the time but when the opponents relax against him, he jumps in and strips them of the ball.

Name that player!

A third-round draft choice out of University of Washington where he was the Huskies' fifth leading all-time scorer, George became a starter for the Squires in 1971-72 when injuries sidelined Neil Johnson and Doug Moe. From the 15-to-18-foot range, George is deadly. He carries better than a 50% mark and it has earned him the nickname of "Hawkeye."

The most acclaimed player in Old Dominion history, Dave led the Monarchs' fast break and the team's rise to national prominence. A First Team College All-American as a senior with a 23.4 scoring average and better than 11 assists per game, he holds ODU career records for most points, most free throws made and attempted and most assists. Dave is a playmaker who can go to the inside.

The ABA's leading scorer in 1972-73, Julius creates the flow of the game. He has great imagination of the court and is an artist with the basketball. Julius was signed as an undergraduate by the Squires and when the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA signed him to a "future" contract, the Squires took action to prohibit him from playing with any other team. Julius was traded to Nets, 8-1-73.

Bernie Williams
Bernie contributed much to the Squires offense in his first campaign with the club, 1971-72, with a 10.6 Average and hit an impressive 20.5 clip during the last dozen games of the season when the club was making its drive for the #2 playoff berth. He was particularly impressive in an early season game against Memphis.
