The American League's 1951 Batting Champ! Although W his father trained him to be a boxer - he used to challenge carnival fighters - Ferris developed into a top-notch baseball player. This was the first time he hit over .300 since he came up to the majors with the A's in 1947. A member of the 1951 Major League All-Star Team, he set the big league record for 1st basemen taking part in 194 double plavs in 1949.
The righthander's third season with the Angels was his finest as he tied teammate Dean Chance with 10 complete games. The workhorse of the staff, Fred led California in innings pitched.
