"Jet-Propelled Sam" is considered the fastest man in the Big Leagues. In 1950, his rookie year in the majors, he led both leagues in stolen bases with 35 and repeated this performance in 1951. After batting .322 and 326 in 2 seasons with Monteal and stealing 89 bases in 1949, Sam got his chance with the Braves and made good. His first year up, he hit .273. He used to catch, but switched because it slowed him down.
He ranks with the best in fielding. Although he doesn't hit .300 very often, he gets a lot of hits. Once, playing with Minneapolis, in the American Association, he hit safely in 33 straight games, missed one day, then continued to get hits in 15 more games, making a total of only one game in 49 when he missed getting at least one hit. Hugh Critz was born in Starkville, Miss. He is 32, five feet, eight inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He bats right-handed. Last season batted .276 in 151 games - fielded .974.
