The pre-draft process might seem daunting with its myriad interviews and pressure-filled workouts. For O'Connell, it was enjoyable. Because it was about football. "I really enjoy talking about the game, learning new things," the Purdue prospect said. "I tried to take it as a learning experience and run with it."



A veteran of five years in the American Football League, Stew was a #4 draft pick back in 1961. The big tackle played as a linebacker during his rookie season. Buffalo coaches were sure that Stew would serve the team best as a tackle and how right they were. Because of his top-flight performances, Stew has been named to several All-American Football League teams. Now recognized as one of pro football's biggest stars, Stew credits hard work as the key to success.



As a pass catching end in college, Tom rated with the best in the country. He was voted All-Missouri Valley every year, was mentioned on several All-American Teams and in 1950 placed 2nd in the Nation among offensive ends. When he joined the Cards in '51 Tom was put on defense and the experiment was a complete success. Today he is one of the finest defensemen in the N.F.L. - a whiz at tackling and an airtight operator on pass defense.
