Despite an eleventh-hour draft day deal that saw Florida and Columbus swap positions, it was a foregone conclusion that the Panthers were going after Jay with their first round pick. They fully expected him to step right into their NHL lineup and, of course, that is what he did. Ultimately taken third overall, Bouwmeester was a defensive stalwart for both the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) and Team Canada, with whom he won a silver medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships. He collected an assist in his NHL debut on October 10, 2002.
When Marshall suffered a broken neck in 1991, it was thought his career was over. However, he overcame the injury and eventually returned to play with the Ottawa 67s. In 1994-95, he made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars.
Given room to skate, Mikael can be one of the more explosive players in the Tampa Bay lineup. In 92-93, he tied for the team lead in shorthanded tallies (2), while finishing fifth in goals (16) and second in game winners (4). Mikael had his best season in 91-92 when he posted career highs in goals (18). points (47) and plus/minus (plus-18) as a member of the Whalers.
