The veteran reliever was tied for the NL lead with 65 appearances in '59. Bill's baseball career began with Clarksdale in '48.



The Padres were enamored by Merrill's talent, making him the highest-drafted prep player out of Maryland in 35 years. Jackson rewarded the Club's faith by making the big-league roster in his fourth pro season. He became an indispensable contributor to San Diego's potent lineup, batting .280 with 12 RBI and four stolen bases in his first month on the job.



The 1951 season had just gotten under way when Les was traded to the Red Sox by the Browns. Now he's back with the Browns, being traded in December of '51. The Browns brought Les up to the majors at the end of the '46 season after he batted .297 at Toledo, and in 12 games he hit .371. His hitting dropped off to .157 in '47, but he brought it up to .257 in '48 and in '49, Les hit .291, and .266 in '50. In 1944 and 1945 he served in the Merchant Marine.
