Appointed interim head coach on 2/18/89 after six seasons as an assistant coach with the Trail Blazers... Led Portland into playoffs for seventh consecutive season... Given the permanent coaching position following the season... Played college basketball at Loyola before being drafted by the Rockets in 1968... Selected by Portland in the 1970 Expansion Draft and was the team's first captain... Also played for the Bulls, Jazz and Kings in a seven-year NBA career... Served as head coach at Chemketa Community College in Oregon for six seasons before re-joining the Trail Blazers in 1983.

As the 1996-97 season wore on, no team improved as much as the youthful Blazers, a tribute to the growing maturity of on-court quarterback Kenny Anderson. The team leader in points, assists and steals, the young (26) veteran enjoyed his best all-around campaign.



Thompson's N.C. State-record career FG accuracy mark includes the top two shooting seasons in Wolfpack history. His best scoring games (30, 29) came against Duke and UNC.



Was three-time All-American choice at UCLA. Became UCLA's top career rebounder with 1370 grabs.
